Remembrance

What we learn from history is that people don't learn from history.
~Warren Buffett

I like to be upbeat, but today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. Yesterday I read a tweet from a right-winger who was warning people not to commit the "sin of empathy." He said that Satan wants you to have compassion. Heads up, people, it's dark out there.

A quote from Cory Doctorow:

“We focus too much on the fire and not enough on the kindling piled up around the tree.”

Here's the thing-- it's super overwhelming because we didn't see it coming, not truly. Right now we're playing catch-up, in terms of emotionally and mentally coming to grips with the situation we're in. It's too much. But also, we have to get up to speed. So as overwhelmed as we are, this is not the time to do things by halves. It's happening whether we are ready or not.

A bit of good news: At least two of the people who attacked the Capitol on January 6th have refused pardons.

I am taking an opposite point of view from the right-winger I mentioned above. I have a motto for the year, as well as One Little Word (Brave). My motto, which is posted in the side-bar, is:

Data Deletion: How to Stay Safe & Clean-Up Your Online Presence (class on Jan 30) taught by Lock Down Your Life

Two unexpected pull-no-punches sources of information: Teen Vogue (Teen Vogue Take, specifically) and Rolling Stone.

Survive the Tyrant: An RPG-style guide to living under an oppressive regime

P.S. Finch is a good app. I mentioned it before. Make sure to do things that keep you going and bring you joy. Paying attention and taking care of yourself are not mutually exclusive.
