Getting Good

There is no glory in practice, but without practice there is no glory.

A poem today about what it takes to get good at something, the effort behind making things look effortless.

The commentator's rabbiting on and on
about how it's so easy for Roger, resentment
thick as butter still in a box. Yet word
from those who've done their homework
is how the man loves to train—how much
he relishes putting in the hours
just as magicians shuffle card after card,

That poem made me think of Ira Glass and the Gap. It's probably time to post it again!

I love that Peg Duthie manages the illusion to every topic mentioned earlier in the final line: "whisked through the air like a wand". The topic reminds me of Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule. Thanks for the Ira Glass piece. I must have missed it before. Makes me feel good!

This video speaks to me so much in my cello playing -- but I can feel the gap closing... still much work to be done, but I'm so glad I haven't given up. Thank you, Tabatha. xo

Thank you. I needed this reminder today. I've been going through this in several different ways this summer-picking up my flute again, poetry, work. I keep telling myself to just keep practicing and improvement will come, but it's good to hear confirmation.

Tabatha,
Thank you so much for both of these poems. I needed both of them. As a quilter and person who has sewn for my entire life, I feel like I am finally making the kind of art that almost satisfies me. I appreciate the reassurance that my poetry will get there some day.

Nice, especially having watched Roger win today!

Tabatha, the video reminded me that the volume of work we do is allows us to find hidden treasures, revise past artistic endeavors, and continue to hone our craft. Thanks.

Wow, your choice of poem is like a prescription for so many of us today! I've been thinking about how I really only feel motivated to do things that come easy to me, and why would I struggle to practice anything that isn't?

Turns out there are reasons.

Well. Thanks for making me burst into tears. Clearly, I, too, needed the message in that video. I probably need it sometimes once a day or for sure once a month. (I've saved the link :-)

Love the poem. Yes. We all have to work hard to become great....and making it "look easy" is the pay off.

Delicious poem that drives Iran Glass' point right into a home run base hit–you gotta do the work, thanks Tabatha!
