Indiscriminate

Have you a little chest to put the Alive in?
~Emily Dickinson

Four lively poems today, with winds and hugs and kisses and a thriving garden.

Teodoro Luna’s Two Kisses
by Alberto Ríos

Mr. Teodoro Luna in his later years had taken to kissing
His wife
Not so much with his lips as with his brows.
This is not to say he put his forehead
Against her mouth--

I Won't Break
by Michael Morrell

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HUGGING THE DWARF GOODBYE AT THE WRITER'S CONFERENCE

The first one is always most awkward, hesitant,
a one sneaker in the store lace-up to see if it fits,
a try it on in the mall dressing room squeeze.
You will not break me, my shirt should read.
Slap a shipping sticker on me. Non-fragile.

The Balloon of the Mind
by W. B. Yeats

Hands, do what you're bid:
Bring the balloon of the mind
That bellies and drags in the wind
Into its narrow shed.

Happiness
by Paisley Rekdal

I have been taught never to brag but now
I cannot help it: I keep
a beautiful garden, all abundance,
indiscriminate, pulling itself
from the stubborn earth:

Violet is our Poetry Friday round-up host.

P.S. I have seen the first line of The Balloon of the Mind end with either a colon or a semi-colon. I'm not sure which Yeats intended. Thoughts?

P.P.S. The title of this post comes from the last poem --
"all abundance,
indiscriminate," -- because today's collection is pretty random.

Oh, thank you for sharing this Paisley Rekdal! I have her book ANIMAL EYE, and the opening poem is one of my favorite poems ever. Something very honest and human about her writing that appeals to me. Happy balloon-of-the-mind day to you! xo

I enjoyed all your 'randomness', Tabatha, but got lost in the 2nd link. I have a niece with cerebral palsy, and the poems that came with that link are real life for someone with a disability. Thank you.

Fun selection of poems, Tabatha. My fave is the first -- I can't resist poets who muse about eyebrows. :)

"I Won't Break" -- everyone should read it. And Paisley Rekdal is new to me and I enjoyed reading her work too. Great Emily line BTW.

I especially loved "Teodoro Luna's Two Kisses."

And I'm intrigued by the start of Paisley Rekdal's poem: "I have been taught never to brag but now/I cannot help it:..." What a great poem or story starter that makes.

For "The Balloon of the Mind" the colon seems right to me.

After reading Linda's comment, I, too, got lost on that page. Profound words. Thanks for the links.

These are all wonderful! I like the eyebrow one (imagine someone lurking around the edges of a relationship to notice that!). The Yeats one seems like a message about writing, poems especially. And I think I will send the gardening one to my sister. Thanks, Tabatha!

Four amazing selections! Like Mary Lee, I fell in LOVE Mr. Luna and his kisses. And "I won't break" is one that I won't soon forget either.
