The howlin' old owl in the woods

I look forward to an America which will reward achievement in the arts as we reward achievement in business or statecraft.
~John F. Kennedy

Happy Poetry Friday!

I'm going to miss the Kennedy Center! It was a cool place when it was led by someone who loves the arts. I enjoyed seeing Phantom of the Opera, The National Symphony Orchestra, the Chieftains, The Lion King, The King & I, and more.

I didn't see the song below in person, but isn't it stunning?

I don't know how long this will be available, but currently you can download a Poem Forest Toolkit from The Kennedy Center. They say "Poem Forest is an eco-poetry project that invites students, teachers, and communities to become environmental advocates through connecting with local ecology and the creative power of poetry."

A poem by IN-Q, who will be at the Kennedy Center on March 16th.

When I think of superheroes I think of super humans.
I think of Superman, Wolverine and Wonder Woman.
Usually they have a cape, or a mask to hide their face just in case.
They have X-ray vision and super-human strength.
Some can even breathe in outer space.
They fly around a while, but always come back to keep our cities safe.
They’re here to save humanity from itself.
It’s a metaphor for how we look outside ourselves for help, and while the fantasies are fun, I choose to look for me and you.

TeacherDance has the Poetry Friday round-up. Thanks, Linda!

P.S. Let me give a shout out to some recent things I've gotten from Etsy: a beautiful phone case from this Ukrainian store, Emily Dickinson pencils, and a "word of the year" mini banner.

Oh, that song, Tabatha, thank you! And the poem you shared feels like I can truly hear his voice, shouting out at all of us, giving hope with "the sun is waiting for you on the other side."! Wonderful!

Wow, beautiful cover of "Yellow Brick Road!" Thanks, too, for the IN-Q poem - he's new to me. The Kennedy Center falling to Trump is beyond disheartening. He's the last person to be in charge of arts and culture (wonder what Caroline Kennedy thinks?). First they stifle the free press, then they take control of the money, and then they go after the artists . . . it's happening in real time in the U.S. It will be interesting to see if Trump attends the Kennedy Center Honors concert this year (he never showed up in his first term). Who will perform? Will he hand out any awards to non-white recipients? Does he have a say as to who receives these honors going forward?

Oh that song! I used to live in DC then in Arlington, Virginia in my twenties and have so many memories of performances I seen at the Kennedy Center. It’s a special place. I’d like to go back once the arts return, if they do.

Wow, Tabetha. That rendition of Yellow Brick Road gave me chills. I have only been to the Kennedy Center once, but I, too, fear for its future. Now I am looking at tickets for IN-Q’s performance!

Thank you, Tabatha, for all the great links. And for reminding us of how to be a human in this day. "I believe in superpowers, and I believe in you and me" and "we save the day with love" Amen and amen. I'm working on adding a little library. Sara Bareilles is so good.

Sara Bareilles is a powerhouse! Her song Orpheus is a favorite.

YOU are a superhero and don't you ever forget it, Tabatha!
I loved this line: "You owe it to this second of eternity to show up"

Ooh! thank you for the poem forest toolkit. I was hoping SUFFS: The Musical would come on tour to the KC--since it's a local/national story. But maybe they'll come to a different venue in DC when they go on tour.

I love the Kennedy quote you start with. Thank you for highlighting this concerning development for all of us who know the value of the arts.

Thank you for all this goodness, Tabatha, especially that powerful rendition of Yellowbrick Road. Every day brings more sadness - I can't even imagine what will happen with the Kennedy Center.

I love this version of "Yellowbrick Road" . Thank you for so many great offerings in your post. I've never been to the Kennedy Center but have friends who have and loved it. As Rose said, every day brings more sadness.
