Trees are poems that the earth writes upon the sky.
~Kahlil Gibran
I'll be spending some quality time with the highway this afternoon, but I hope to have time in the morning for a tree or two.
TREES
by W.S. Merwin
I am looking at trees
they may be one of the things I will miss
most from the earth
though many of the ones I have seen
already I cannot remember

Enjoy your traveling, Tabatha. I do love trees, am fortunate to be surrounded by them here in my home, and wrote about them today, too. "I listen to them tenderly" is a line that touches me. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous poem and photograph. I wonder what it is about trees that make so many of us reflect on our mortality. Happy travels.
ReplyDeleteSuch generous, patient creatures, these trees. I think I'd like to be one when I grow up. Hope your Thanksgiving was a good one, Tabatha!
ReplyDeleteHave you read THE HIDDEN LIFE OF TREES? I didn't think I could love trees more...but now I do.
ReplyDeleteYou and I were both thinking of trees this week, Tabatha. I especially love that Kahlil Gibran quote...yes indeed they are.
ReplyDeleteYes, Merwin has it right. Trees are so much of the earth and of time, too.
ReplyDeleteI like the conversation Merwin's having with the trees, especially "they have carried me in their branches." And the lack of punctuation carries you smoothly through his thought. Thanks for sharing this moving poem Tabatha. I saw an exhibit that featured his trees and poetry this past spring at the American Writer's Museum, it was a wonderful, relaxing experience, here's a link to it: https://merwinconservancy.org/2017/05/palm-exhibit-debuts-at-american-writers-museum-is-very-well-received/
ReplyDeleteThanks for introducing me to this poem. Trees are just magic!
ReplyDeleteI love this - thank you!
ReplyDeleteSafe travels! Thanks for sharing such a lovely poem.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful poem....and the video is mesmerizing. I love it. I pinned it to my pinterest poetry board. That line....I listen to them tenderly. That's a line that will stay with me. Thank you.
