Laughing Like A Birthday Cake

A poem about the Spanish painter Goya today. (I included a Goya self-portrait in this post and a drawing that I hope wasn't a self-portrait here.)

excerpt of Candle Hat
by Billy Collins

...He appears to be smiling out at us as if he knew
we would be amused by the extraordinary hat on his head
which is fitted around the brim with candle holders,
a device that allowed him to work into the night.

You can only wonder what it would be like
to be wearing such a chandelier on your head
as if you were a walking dining room or concert hall.

You can read the rest here.

Poetry Monster wanted to stop by:

So happy to hear Billy Collins recite this poem...I will be thinking of it when I'm next at the Met - and it will make me smile.

  9. Happy, happy birthday! I think it's better to have candles on a cake than some on your head any day!

  10. Billy is so right--after seeing this self-portrait of Goya, you wouldn't need to read any comprehensive biography--you understand who he was, "laughing like a birthday cake." Way to do you, too, Tabatha--this post is very Tabatha--and I wish you many, many happy returns of the day!

  11. A day late to your birthday party– naughty, naughty me! I hope you and Poetry Monster enjoyed festive celebrations of YOUness. Did you have candle-star-light flickering on your chest like Poetry Monster, wear a "concert hall" hat like Goya, or did your family adorn you with a twinkling halo? Wherever you sparkle, my friend, I appreciate your glow.
