The object of a New Year is not that we should have a new year. It is that we should have a new soul and a new nose; new feet, a new backbone, new ears, and new eyes.
~G.K. Chesterton
You know what I love about Michelle Heidenrich Barnes? Her good-nature, humor, supportiveness, and wit, among other things. She is an energetic and consistent part of this very dear poetry community. As my winter swap partner, Michelle sent me the book I mentioned last week, in addition to the timely poem below. Enjoy!
One more quote:
Good resolutions are like babies crying in church. They should be carried out immediately.

Betsy at I Think in Poems has the Poetry Friday round-up.
It's a beauty of a poem, isn't it? So lovely to see someone's good ideas of living, & then to write so eloquently about savoring time. Thank you for sharing, Tabatha!
ReplyDeleteAww, thanks so much for those kind words that accompany my poem, Tabatha. I do believe we have a serious mutual admiration society going on here at Poetry Friday! Also love the quotes you chose to highlight today-- that Chesterton quote especially hit home. Happy New Year, my friend!
ReplyDeleteGreat offering today. I also loved all the accompanying quotes that wrap around your post!
ReplyDeleteI loved Michelle's poem so much I had to read it several times. It is a very freeing poem, and just what I needed to hear today. I think I will print this up and post it where I can read it every day! I also enjoyed your quotes, Tabatha--you have "hit the (literary) spot" today. Thank you! = )
ReplyDeleteLove the thought of time NOT swallowing one whole... thanks Michelle and Tabatha! xo
ReplyDeleteLovely.
ReplyDeleteI will borrow that poem to help me with my One Little Word (I'm trying it for the first time this year).
And I'll be back for next year's Winter Poem Swap! Hold a place for me!
Love Michelle's poem, so true and real. Thanks for sharing and for the surrounding profound, if not a little snarky, quotes. I am making secret resolutions so no one but me will be accountable for them.
ReplyDeleteHere's to regrets that no longer have the power to consume! Thanks for sharing Michelle's poem, Tabatha - Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteI think Michelle is absolutely right, Tabatha - "taking time" is the resolution that makes a difference. Also love the Chesterton! I kept something he wrote up near my computer for years: "Lying in bed would be an altogether perfect and supreme experience if only one had a colored pencil long enough to draw on the ceiling."
ReplyDeleteGreat poem for the new year, Michelle and Tabatha. I'm chewing a piece of dark chocolate twenty-six times as I write this and savoring without regret! Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteJust popping in to thank everyone for these lovely comments! You've really warmed my heart on this cold and blustery day.
ReplyDeleteI wanted to say "stellar" poem but then realized that I was likely just following Michelle's lead with the image she used. Wowie, what a powerful gift to guide you into the new year. Here's to new backbones -- I know I need one! Love the quotes and the inspiration I always find here. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous poem. Will be chewing on these images well beyond twenty-six times...well done, Michelle, and thank you Tabatha!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous poem, Tabatha. I would love to be on the poem swap list whenever if happens again. It was so much fun last summer.
ReplyDeleteLove the poem. Lots to think about here. Thank you, Tabitha! Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, Tabatha, and I enjoyed your poem on Michelle's blog. I love her, too, for all those reasons you mentioned. Behind that generous spirit and quick wit are thoughts like these in this poem - worthy of chewing on for a long time....
